I’ve been cleaning carpets professionally for ten years. It started at 16 when I began helping an experienced cleaner during school holidays — commercial jobs mostly, the odd domestic property too. That part-time work carried on alongside school, then became full-time once I left. So by the time I set up 3 Counties Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning, I wasn’t starting from scratch. I’d already cleaned hundreds of properties across Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, and Herefordshire — and I’d learned the job from someone who did it properly.

Hot Water Extraction — The Deep Clean Method

Hot water extraction is the method I use on virtually every job, and it’s the method recommended by carpet manufacturers and the IICRC (the international cleaning standards body). You might have heard it called steam cleaning — the two terms get used interchangeably — but hot water extraction is more accurate. The process works by injecting hot water and a professional cleaning solution deep into the carpet fibres, then extracting it back out along with the dirt, allergens, bacteria, and anything else that’s worked its way into the pile.

It’s thorough in a way that surface cleaning simply isn’t. Dust mites, pet dander, and bacteria that live deep in the fibres get pulled out, not just disturbed. A bactericide is included as standard with every clean. Drying time is typically 4–6 hours — I’ll always advise you on this before I leave so you know exactly what to expect.
